Well, that is the secret headquarters of 826la. good people trying to learn the kids sumtin about creative writing after school. Sadly, it seems I’m too old to learn from them… maybe if I wear one of those hats with the propeller on it, they’ll let me in…

they asked me and my partners at Bedrock Studios down the street to help ‘em out with some recording. find out more about it here. Basically the kids wrote all kinds of randomness that these poor willing bands had to make a song out of. I gotta say. the songs are pretty bad-ass. the kids randomness if hilarious and definitely creative (go 826!).

To say the least, recording some of these was way fun.

Remember that radio station that we used to have in LA… you know, Indie 103.1? So, back in January the great Mr. Shovel continued with us to keep the weekly Check One Twosdays train rolling after the station as we knew it died. For those of you who already forgot, Check One Twosdays was the live performance component to Mr. Shovel’s weekly radio show. The show featured the best local bands and the show was held every Tuesday at the Echoplex… Get it? Check One TWOsday. From then to now, we (I) got a bit busy getting our (my) shit together and the big casualty of this was a rad performance by io echo.

After (finally) editing the performance this weekend. I’ve decided that I’m an ass… Not that I purposely didn’t make time to finish this but the back burner had an amazing steak on it… Sorry to the band, Mr. Shovel and you for holding out. Though I would not call myself a “fan,” I’ve watched nearly every episode via sitting on the same couch with friends. I even have an annoying habit of saying “gossip girl here…” when the show comes on… This show is an uncontrollable phenomenon that I’m sure you, your wife or girlfriend have brought you to.

Reason that I bring it up is not to bring up some Blair Waldorf gossip but to let you know that our buddies Afternoons (no “the”) have a song on the show tonight and we frantically released it for them. Its on most stores (including ours, of course).

… though not godamn iTunes, yet. Speaking of, I love Apple but what’s the deal with the iTunes store. Getting stuff on their store seems to take WEEKS longer than anywhere else… LAME. Also LAME-by-Apple: the iPhone. Have you tired looking up a contact on this sucker. I could make the call and be done with it on a blackberry by the time this thing looks up the contact… inevitably it will get better, me hopes. I have faith. Maybe one day iTunes will get it together too.

So, check out the video for the Afternoons song on Gossip Girl tonight. The song is called Saturday Morning (after the funeral). Funny how a band called Afternoons has a song with the word morning in it, eh?

Hey Everyone. Kamran here (guy who runs spaceland recs and produces the vids/record). Just wanted to let you know about a new project that we have going on with our friend Mr. Shovel at Indie 103.1.

As some of you may know Indie had a great night at the Viper Room on Monday nights around Shovel’s Check One Two Sunday Night Radio show. The radio show plays the best in local music and the viper room night did the same in the form of a live event. Sadly for those of us that went to the Monday night event, Joe the rad booker at Viper Room moved on to greener pastures and as many bands can tell you, playing at the viper room can be an up hill battle… especially with out Joe there. Anyway, long story short: Check One Two nights are now at the Echoplex and are now every Tuesday. Hence, the new name of the club night of Check One Twosdays.

Because the show is now at one of our venues, the Spaceland Recordings team and I have the great privilidge of filming and recording these amazing shows for you to enjoy. Our plan is:

• Film/Record on Tues.
• Mix and Edit like crazy Wed-Sat
• Songs play on Indie 103 on Sunday night
• Videos go up online to watch Sunday night
• FREE MP3s downloads go up on our website Sunday night at spacelandrecordings.com/indie1031

To say the least, its quite an undertaking but stemming from our orginal idea of recording the Monday Night residents, this is right in line with the kind of thing that we like to do: help our local favs and record unique moments at the club. In the two short years that Ra Ra Riot have been together they have taken their band from the campus of Syracuse University to crowds across North America and Europe touring with the likes of Editors and Tokyo Police Club. Their debut full length album The Rhumb Line came out this August on Barsuk. The young group recently came through LA and stopped in at The Echo where Mania TV and Spaceland Recordings captured the energy of their live show. Last month, Nicole Morier of Electrocute had a party at Spaceland. All her friends were there; The Bird and The Bee, Willoughby, The Polyamorous Affair, The Lady Tigra, Le C (King Crab), Wolfkin, Hard Place and DJ Lance Rock. But this wasn’t a birthday party, nor was it a record release party. This was a party for one man that has united the artistic community behind him. The man is Barrack Obama and the party was Obamarama. A party that raised $4,000 for the Obama campaign.
